Voltaire électronique is based on the Voltaire Foundation's Les Oeuvres complètes de Voltaire (Oxfordedition). This is the first complete critical edition to be undertaken and the first edition of Voltaire's works to appear for well over a century.

Each text in the database is edited by one or more specialists and includes an introduction, all authentic variants, and full annotation. Texts yet to appear in the Oxford edition are reproduced either from a source produced under Voltaire's supervision or from the last complete edition of Voltaire's works, Oeuvres complètes de Voltaire, ed. Louis Moland, Paris, Garnier (1877-1885).

Using Voltaire électronique, users can search on any word or phrase across the entire corpus or make very precise searches, limited to particular literary forms, texts, or dates. Users can search Voltaire's text alone or in combination with the Oxford edition's critical apparatus. The interface is available in both English and French.
