Media Descriptions

Diazo Microfilm provides a photographic copy of the original document. Diazo film is covered with a special coating which protects the emulsion from easily being scratched and the film from being torn. This feature makes diazo microfilm ideal as a "working copy." It's widely used in libraries, government facilities and research centers, since it readily withstands daily use. Diazo copies are less expensive than silver halide microfilm. Microfilm is produced on both 16MM and 35MM stock, depending on the size of the original document (e.g., most census film was filmed with 35MM). Either film size can be viewed with most modern microfilm readers.

Microfiche contains several documents on one card. A single title may be placed on several fiche cards, which are viewed through a microfiche or microfilm/fiche reader. Many titles can be found on microfiche including books, histories, indexes and public records.

Silver Halide Microfilm also provides a photographic copy of the original document. Silver film displays a grayscale image, which can be more readable than diazo film. The silver film is also nearly one-third more expensive than diazo and is primarily used for archival purposes. Microfilm is produced on both 16mm and 35mm stock, depending on the size of the original document (e.g., US federal census records were produced on 35mm film). Either film size can be viewed with most modern microfilm readers.
