ProQuest Announces Prisma Journals for Social Sciences and Humanities
Comprehensive full-text digital resource for Hispanic and Latin American studies developed with HAPI
ANN ARBOR, Mich., April 8, 2005 -- ProQuest announces Publicaciones y Revistas Sociales y Humanísticas (Prisma), a new collection of full-text scholarly journals in social sciences and the humanities. Prisma, the first comprehensive resource for Hispanic and Latin American studies, was developed in cooperation with the Hispanic American Periodicals Index (HAPI). ProQuest Information and Learning, a unit of ProQuest Company, is an electronic publisher of content for libraries and educational institutions worldwide.

“HAPI is the leading index for Hispanic American Studies and the ability to link from its index to ProQuest’s full-text journals for mutual customers makes this an exciting proposition for researchers and students in many areas of study,” said Mary Sauer-Games, ProQuest vice president, Chadwyck-Healey publishing.

Significant growth of academic interest in the Hispanic and Latin American traditions and changing demographics in the U.S. mean that libraries’ need for Spanish-language material is growing.   Prisma will fill a critical need in libraries for Spanish-language journal content in the humanities and social sciences.  It will provide digital access to the full text of many English and Spanish-language social sciences and humanities journals that are not readily available in other formats.  Some of the journals are published only in hard copy or outside the U.S.  In other cases, an e-journal may be available, but it is not searchable and no archive exists.

Full-text titles in Prisma will include:

  • ChasquiArizona State University
  • ConfluenciaUniversity of North Colorado, Department of Hispanic Studies
  • Revista Hispanica Moderna – Columbia University, Hispanic Institute of the U.S.
  • GestosUniversity of California at Irvine, Department of Spanish and Portuguese
  • Boletín Americanista – Universitat de Barcelona, Facultad de Geografía e Historia
  • Anuario de Estudios Centroamericanos – Editorial de la Universidad de Costa Rica

The database will be available in Fall 2005 with 30 to 40 full-text journals. It will grow rapidly to 60 journals; approximately 10 journals will be added in each subsequent year with coverage for most titles from 2000 to the present.  Subscribers to both Prisma and HAPI will be able to link from HAPI to selected full-text journal content provided by ProQuest.

Demonstrations of Prisma will be available at the ALA Annual Conference in June.  Libraries may receive more information by contacting their account representative at 1-800-521-0600, ext. 3183 or 3452 (outside the U.S., call +44-1-223-215-512) or pqsales@il.proquest.com . Editors may call 1-800-521-0600, ext. 6489 or email pr@il.proquest.com .
