Using the Controlled Vocabulary of Subject Terms

Use terms from the ProQuest Controlled Vocabulary for precise searching of subject fields in ProQuest databases. The vocabulary contains nearly 11,000 terms covering subject areas ranging from business and industry to economics and trade, education, arts and humanities, social sciences, sports and entertainment, history, medicine, and science.

The ProQuest Controlled Vocabulary is a natural language, hierarchical thesaurus that conforms with NISO Standard Z39.19, Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management of Monolingual Controlled Vocabularies. Most term entries have cross-references for Broader Terms (BT), Narrower Terms (NT), Related Terms (RT), and Used For (UF) terms. More than 25% of the terms have Scope Notes, which provide definitions for term usage. The vocabulary contains more than 66,000 Broader, Narrower, and Related terms.

Also included for a majority of business terms are Classification Codes (CC). These four-digit codes are used to index articles at a broader level in the ABI/INFORM® and ProQuest Banking Information Source databases. The Classification Code chart is available for downloading below.
