SIM: Filming Policies

Priorities
When you use this online SIM catalog, you may see some date ranges for a title marked with an asterisk (*) indicating that you should inquire about availability. That could signify that the date range for that title is in the process of being filmed and has not yet been placed in our vaults. Please contact your UMI representative to determine the exact status for that title/date range.

Pricing
Prices and product availability are subject to change without notice. Current pricing for our microform edition of newspapers, special UMI serials, and print newspaper indexes can be found in this Serials in Microform catalog or from your UMI representative.

Please note: A 5% processing fee will be assessed for all microfiche titles delivered quarterly, to cover additional handling charges.

Non-Silver Option
You can order the current volume/year and future volume/years for titles on non-silver film at an average of 15% less than the listed price. Vesicular-type film is available for most current year newspapers; some newspapers ordered on negative polarity and non-silver microform are produced on diazo-type film. Note that non-silver film is not available in 16mm. If the non-silver option is not specified on your order, silver film will be supplied.

A few serial titles, such as some film types that we distribute for other micropublishers, are available on silver film only.

Backfile volumes are available on silver only. Newspaper backfiles are available on vesicular film for The New York Times, Los Angeles Times (selected years, both Record and Library editions), The Christian Science Monitor, The Wall Street Journal (Eastern edition), and USA TODAY. All other newspaper backfiles are available on silver only.

Newspaper Filming Policy Summary
Format and Film type: When filmed by UMI, most newspapers are available on 35mm microfilm only. Select newspapers, such as major titles, are also available on microfiche and 16mm microfilm. Backfiles of most newspapers are available in silver microfilm only. Vesicular microform is available for all current subscriptions, with the exception of newspapers ordered on "negative polarity, non-silver microform", which are produced on diazo.

Polarity: All titles are available in either positive or negative polarity on silver film and positive polarity on non-silver film (see also notes above about Format and Film Type).

Quality: UMI's microform images are taken directly from the original printed pages, so you always get the clearest possible image. However, in the case of some older newspapers in our serials program, copy quality cannot be guaranteed.
