What happened?

The following ProQuest error:"Error 1012: ProQuest cannot log you in because of an internal problem with our system." will display when the authentication system in the ProQuest web client has experienced an unexpected error. This error can occur for a variety of reasons, but it is not a result of any action or inaction on the part of the user.

What does this mean?

If you are a student or library patron, this error should not alarm you and does not mean you have done anything wrong. This error can occur for a variety of reasons. These malfunctions are usual only momentary, and do not necessarily reflect any persistent problem.

What should I do?

This error is normally temporary. We recommend that you attempt to access ProQuest via the same method you used before:

  • If you were accessing ProQuest directly, please go to http://proquest.umi.com/login.
  • If you were following a link from library or institutional web page, please return to that web page and click on that link again.
  • If you were accessing ProQuest through your library web site, please go to that web site again and follow its instructions for accessing ProQuest.
  • If you are attempting to access ProQuest with a username and password, you may want to access ProQuest through this page. If you are in the UK or if you know that you are using an Athens username and password, you may want to access ProQuest through this page.

If you do not know what any of the above terms mean, you should contact your library reference desk, your institutional help desk, or your offsite support services for assistance.

If you believe you have properly configured you computer for access and have accurate access information from your library and you are still unable to connect, you may also wish to review the following:

  • Check your computer and web browser settings.  To ensure you will be able to successfully access ProQuest products, please click on our Browser Health Check.

If you have received this error multiple times from multiple attempts to access ProQuest, there may be a larger problem occurring. Please contact your library or institutional help desk for assistance. Unfortunately, ProQuest Support can not provide authentication information or assistance directly to end-users.

Unfortunately, because every library is set up differently, ProQuest Support cannot provide authentication assistance or information to end-users.
